Overview
The rate of new cases of melanoma of the skin was 22.8 per 100,000 men and women per year. The death rate was 2.2 per 100,000 men and women per year. These rates are age-adjusted and based on 2014–2018 cases and 2015–2019 deaths. In 2018, there were an estimated 1,294,886 people living with melanoma of the skin in the United States. Relative survival is an estimate of the percentage of patients who would be expected to survive the effects of their cancer. It excludes the risk of dying from other causes. Because survival statistics are based on large groups of people, they cannot be used to predict exactly what will happen to an individual patient. No two patients are entirely alike, and treatment and responses to treatment can vary greatly. In 2021, it is estimated that there will be 106,110 new cases of melanoma of the skin and an estimated 7,180 people will die of this disease. Melanoma is more common in men than women and among individuals of fair complexion and those who have been exposed to natural or artificial sunlight (such as tanning beds) over long periods of time. There are more new cases among whites than any other racial/ethnic group. The rate of new cases of melanoma of the skin was 22.8 per 100,000 men and women per year based on 2014–2018 cases, age-adjusted. Cancers of the skin (most of which are basal and squamous cell skin cancers) are by far the most common of all types of cancer. According to one estimate, about 5.4 million basal and squamous cell skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the US (occurring in about 3.3 million Americans, as some people have more than one). About 8 out of 10 of these are basal cell cancers. Squamous cell cancers occur less often. The number of these cancers has been increasing for many years. This is probably from a combination of better skin cancer detection, people getting more sun exposure, and people living longer. The 2022 Mary Mulready Sullivan Oncology Symposium will provide comprehensive information from internationally recognized experts on innovations in this important field of the prevention, detection and treatment of melanoma and skin cancer.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Discuss prevention, monitoring and treatment strategies basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer
  2. Describe the role of surgery in management of melanoma
  3. Define new immunotherapy and targeted treatments for melanoma
  4. Articulate skin cancer therapy adverse effects and their management
