Overview

This interprofessional simulation-based activity is designed to strengthen debriefing skills for both faculty and learners who facilitate or participate in clinical simulations. Through a combination of brief didactic overview, demonstration, and guided practice using video-recorded simulation scenarios, participants will explore key principles of effective case design and high-impact debriefing.

Faculty and learners from multiple professions will work together to apply debriefing frameworks, practice strategies for promoting psychological safety and reflective dialogue, and identify opportunities to improve team communication, roles and responsibilities, and shared decision-making in their own simulation-based education and clinical practice.


Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Review core steps in planning, facilitating, and evaluating simulation-based learning activities that are planned by and for the interprofessional healthcare team, with debriefing as the primary driver of team learning and performance change
  2. Describe evidence-based approaches for designing and delivering high-quality simulation cases that address identified practice gaps of the healthcare team and optimize debriefing for collaborative clinical reasoning and communication
  3. Identify key elements, frameworks, and best practices for leading psychologically safe, learner-centered debriefings that enhance interprofessional teamwork, roles and responsibilities, and shared decision-making
  4. Apply debriefing concepts and techniques in an interprofessional context by jointly analyzing and discussing sample video-recorded simulation scenarios from both learner and faculty perspectives, with a focus on changes in team skills, strategies, and performance
