This course is limited to 15 participants.

Overview

This Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) endorsed course prepares multidisciplinary teams to deliver high quality extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support for patients with severe cardiac and respiratory failure.   The curriculum provides a safe, team centered learning environment where participants develop both the technical and nontechnical skills essential for effective ECMO care.

Core components include:

  • Didactic lectures

  • Interactive physiology simulation

  • Hands on equipment training and circuit priming drills

  • High fidelity, simulation based troubleshooting

  • ECMO transport considerations

Hartford Hospital is the first center in New England to receive ELSO endorsement for an adult ECMO training program.  This comprehensive, three day course integrates expert led didactic instruction with immersive simulation experiences.  Educational sessions are facilitated by clinicians specializing in critical care medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, and perfusion, ECMO Specialists, and are supported by high fidelity simulation to reinforce clinical decision making and team communication.

The course fulfills the Step 1 and Step 2 requirements for candidates pursuing the ELSO Adult ECMO Certification Exam (E-AEC).  Offered in person at the Center for Education, Simulation, and Innovation at Hartford Hospital, it is designed for all bedside ECMO care providers, including physicians, physician assistants, perfusionists, nurses, nurse practitioners, ECMO specialists, and respiratory therapists.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe foundational principles of extracorporeal life support, including gas exchange, pump mechanics, and physiologic implications for adult patients
  2. Describe the clinical conditions in which ECLS is appropriate for adult patients, as well as the key contraindications that may limit its use
  3. Demonstrate basic proficiency in recognizing how individual circuit components interact to maintain adequate flow, gas exchange, and patient stability
  4. Identify key concerns in the management of patients receiving ECLS, including physiologic instability, circuit issues, and multidisciplinary coordination
  5. Describe common complications that may occur during ECLS support, including patient-related, circuit-related, and management-related issues
  6. Identify and implement the correct response steps for common ECLS emergencies, including circuit complications, patient instability, and equipment failures in a realistic, high-fidelity simulation scenario
  7. Apply core ECLS concepts in realistic, high-fidelity simulation scenarios to support safe and effective patient management
