HHC Cancer Institute “Practice Makes Perfect”: Communication Matters (05.13.2026)

The HHC Cancer Institute clinicians care for patients living with a cancer diagnosis across the care continuum. Relationship centered communication is an evidence- based intervention that facilitates trust and understanding, leading to on-going shared decision making. Formal medical and inter-professional education does not adequately train clinical staff to feel comfortable, confident and capable to have meaningful goals of care discussions from the time of diagnosis of a serious illness. The goal of the development of this workshop is to address the knowledge, skills and attitude gap for effective patient and family centric communication to enhance the patient, family and clinician experience. This workshop will serve as a foundation for creating an on-going supportive community that focuses on the opportunity to enhance relationship centered communication. Improving this skill set will also diminish burnout and moral distress and improve our resilience and wellbeing.

1. Articulate the elements and benefi ts of Relationship Centered Communication and its impact on patient and family centered care
2. Acquire one new communication tool to use in clinical practice
3. Explore the barriers and facilitators to successful patient/family, clinician conversations
4. Practice eff ective communication best practice strategies in a safe learning environment

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations received in writing no less than 5 business days before the course will receive a full refund.  No refunds will be made for cancellations received after that date.  All refunds will be made in accordance with the procedures of the HHC Accounts Payable Department, and may take up to 60 days.  Please send cancellation requests to continuinged@hhchealth.org.
