Overview
The session will cover: Essentials: What is a conservator? Why does this matter? An overview of Legally Authorized Representatives (LAR) and advance directives. Defining: A detailed look at conservators and their responsibilities. FAQs: Answers to frequently asked questions on this topic.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between conservatorship and other forms of decision-making authority in Connecticut
  2. Define the role of a conservator in a healthcare context
  3. Describe the rights and responsibilities of conservators in making healthcare decisions on behalf of a conserved individual.
  4. Identify the Connecticut legal process involved in appointing a conservator and the criteria for determining when a conservatorship is necessary.
  5. Discuss the role of the healthcare provider in assessing capacity and contributing to the legal process of establishing conservatorship.
  6. Follow appropriate documentation practices when recording decisions involving conservators in the patient’s medical record.
  7. Identify situations in which a conservatorship may need to be challenged, modified, or terminated and the healthcare team’s role in such processes.
  8. Describe the role of temporary or emergency conservatorships in acute care settings and how these differ from general conservatorships.
