Diabetes at the Bedside: Strategies for Glycemic Control, Nutrition & Wound Healing for Nursing

This education session for nurses will review comprehensive nursing care of the diabetic patient's glycemic management, dietary approaches, and wound care.

1. Review principles of glycemic management for bedside nursing including glycemic monitoring and insulin administration.
2. Discuss factors experienced by patients in the acute setting that have an impact on glycemic management and nursing care.
3. Discuss strategies nurses can use to work through challenging patient situations in the acute setting.
4. Review macronutrients and their effects on blood sugar
5. Discuss carbohydrate counting and insulin to carbohydrate ratios
6. Discuss strategies nurses can use to empower patients to use nutrition to aid in blood sugar management in the hospital setting.
7. Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms by which diabetes impairs wound healing.
8. Identify common types of chronic wounds in diabetic patients and their clinical presentation.
9. Discuss evidence-based strategies for the prevention and management of wounds in diabetic patients.
10. Evaluate multidisciplinary approaches to optimize wound healing outcomes in patients with diabetes.

ANCC Contact Hour(s) (7.00 hours)

In support of improving patient care, Hartford HealthCare is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
