Overview

The Veterans Mental Health Conference brings together military and healthcare professionals to explore the unique behavioral health needs of veterans and service members.

Through presentations, personal military experiences, and interactive discussions, participants will examine how military culture, deployment experiences, and the transition from individual to military identity can influence mental health, disclosure of concerns, and willingness to seek treatment.

Topics will include the evolving approach to mental health within the military, moral injury, the importance of asking patients about military service, and strategies for asking meaningful follow-up questions that support more informed clinical assessment.

The conference is designed to help healthcare professionals recognize veteran-specific behavioral health considerations, strengthen patient-provider communication, and incorporate military experiences into clinical decision-making.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify how military culture and experiences may influence veterans' behavioral health, disclosure of concerns, and willingness to seek treatment.
  2. Recognize military-related behavioral health concerns, including moral injury and factors associated with suicide risk.
  3. Apply appropriate questioning strategies to identify military service history, explore veteran-specific health concerns, and inform further clinical assessment.
