Overview
Solid organ transplantation has become the standard of care for individuals with end-stage kidney, liver, or heart disease. There are more than 103,000 people in the United States on the United Network for Organ Sharing wait list. Advances through research have significantly impacted the success rates of transplantation, resulting in increased life years and improved quality of life for transplant recipients. Care of patients pre and post transplant is conducted in collaboration with community providers. Participants who attend this symposium will be able to apply updated therapies to the care of individuals with end-stage organ disease.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify clinical and logistical challenges associated with complex options
  2. Differentiate between various available options
  3. Identify relevant OPTN and CMS policies as a framework for practice
  4. Apply critical thinking to provide guidance to donor and recipient pairs
  5. Recognize the evidence-based health risks associated with alcohol and contemporary marijuana use, including cancer risk, mental health effects, sleep disruption, and cognitive impairment, with attention to dose, frequency, and product potency.
  6. Identify the distinct and overlapping neurocognitive and behavioral effects of alcohol and marijuana use and interpret how these effects may present in clinical practice, including implications for functioning, adherence, and diagnostic clarity.
  7. Implement evidence-based assessment and counseling strategies consistent with lifestyle medicine and addiction-informed care, including screening, patient education, harm reduction, and referral to appropriate treatments for anxiety, sleep disturbance, and substance-related disorders.
  8. Describe the current indications, techniques, and outcomes of robotic-assisted living donor nephrectomy and kidney transplantation
  9. Evaluate the potential benefits, limitations, and future applications of robotic surgical systems in transplant surgery, including their impact on donor and recipient outcomes
  10. Critically assess patient selection, perioperative outcomes, and barriers to broader adoption of robotic techniques in transplant surgery
  11. Identify suspicious lesions
  12. Recognize cutaneous viral infections
  13. Recognize cutaneous fungal infections
  14. Describe the rationale for implementing a high frequency pre-habilitation program in hospitalized cardiac transplant candidates
  15. Identify key factors contributing to effective intensive rehabilitation in the intensive care unit (ICU)
