Overview
This program will provide a framework for the Dignity Model of Care:The Dignity Model shows three major categories of factors that affect the patient’s sense of dignity: Illness-Related Issues: How the illness itself affects personal feelings of dignity Dignity-Conserving Repertoire: How a patient’s own perspectives and practices can impact their sense of dignity Social Dignity Inventory: How the quality of interactions with others can enhance or detract from one’s sense of dignity Dr. Harvey Max Chochinov and our HH Schwartz Center team will create an interactive discussion to explore dignity in care as a tangible way to deliver compassionate care to patients and their families

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Define dignity as a clinical construct in serious illness, based on the Model of Dignity in the Terminally Ill
  2. Identify how common clinical factors and routine clinical interactions influence patients’ sense of dignity, across settings of illness, dependency, and end-of-life care
  3. Incorporate dignity-conserving interventions into clinical practice, including the use of Dignity Therapy and the Patient Dignity Question, to enhance person-centred care and improve the clinical experience of patients and families
