Overview
This learning event is for oncology nurses is for the professional to have current knowledge related to cancer therapies and their management for patient and family support and education. Knowledge and implementation of best evidence are necessary to create positive patient outcomes. Population specific competencies and interventions to combat negative work environments are essential to promote a healthy professional life for the oncology nurse. In order for nurses to obtain certification and to maintain certification they must obtain contact hours in certain content areas related to oncology competency for the generalist oncology nurse. Support for certification is a primary goal of the Connecticut Chapters of the Oncology Nursing Society.

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. articulate the oncology nurse’s role as a healthcare leader and activities that can empower the nurse as advocate on the healthcare team.
  2. identify new innovative therapies and the oncology nurse's role in assessment, best practice interventions as well as patient and family education to ensure positive clinical outcomes
  3. define the impact of the social determinants of health and cultural competence on the quality and experience of cancer care
  4. incorporate best practice supportive care strategies to enhance quality of life across the care continuum

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Hartford HealthCare, the Central Connecticut Oncology Nursing Society, and the Southwest Connecticut Oncology Nursing Society.  Hartford HealthCare is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

  • Nurses: This activity is designated for a maximum of 4.00 ANCC contact hours.
  • All Other Learners: All other learners will receive a Certificate of Participation for a maximum of 4.00 hours of education. Consult your professional licensing board regarding the applicability and acceptance of certificates of participation for educational activities certified by an organization accredited by Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education.
