Solid organ transplantation has become the standard of care for individuals with end-stage kidney, liver, or heart disease. There are more than 103,000 people in the United States on the United Network for Organ Sharing wait list. Advances through research have significantly impacted the success rates of transplantation, resulting in increased life years and improved quality of life for transplant recipients. Care of patients pre and post transplant is conducted in collaboration with community providers. Participants who attend this symposium will be able to apply updated therapies to the care of individuals with end-stage organ disease.

  1. Define Xenotransplantation and discuss specific challenges with utilization of these organs
  2. Describe factors that predict non-adherence in transplant recipients.
  3. Identify importance of nutrition and weight management in transplant and how this correlates with outcomes.
  4. Describe different types of donors and associated risk factors in for heart, liver and kidney recipients based on utilization of the different donor organs
  5. Identify ethical concerns and variations in religious beliefs with regard to use of different types of organ donors.
  6. Summarize environmental concerns facing transplant recipients and precautions needed to optimize safety from infection.
