Target Audience
Specialties - Emergency Medicine, Nursing, Psychiatry, Social Work
Professions - Advanced Practice Nurse (all), Allied Health Professional, Nurse, Physician (includes Resident/Fellow), Physician Assistant, Psychologist, Social Worker

Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Define healthcare bias
  2. Examine diversity and health equity examples
  3. Review desired state of emergency psychiatry
  4. Examine the opioid epidemic and healthcare systems
  5. Discuss strategies to overcome barriers and de-escalate crisis situations in the community
  6. Examine "compassionomics" and staff well-being in emergency psychiatry

Overview
Psychiatric emergency department staff have years of experience but based on our own human implicit biases, can misrepresent or misdiagnose a patient which steers a patient down the wrong path in mental health care. This activity will help emergency providers and clinicians identify gaps, areas of opportunity, and align best practices to provide an exceptional patient experience in emergency psychiatry. Learners will review our own bias and vulnerabilities as mental health care workers. Finally, we will explore opportunities to improve patient experience in emergency psychiatry.
